Beaches and good weather
The best time to visit the beaches of Mexico with warm temperatures, just the right water to bathe and the little crowd is generally from December to May. On the Pacific coast (Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta), the rainy season ends in mid-October, but tourists don’t start arriving until another month. The Yucatan Peninsula (Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum) is still quite humid until late November, but you will find good prices and pleasant weather towards the beginning of December. For those who want more temperate days and cooler nights, the ideal is to leave in January or February.
If you are looking for good prices, the best time to visit most areas of Mexico is in the middle of the hurricane season: from July to mid-November in Yucatan, and August-September on the Pacific Coast; in some areas, such as Baja, you can find good discounts as early as mid-June with the rise of summer heat. In this period everything from hotels to airline tickets (read also “How to find offers for the best flights”) to excursions will cost less than ever, and you can save a lot of money. Mexico City is an exception, with its best prices during the coldest month of the year, from November to mid-February, outside the typical holiday periods of Christmas and New Year.
Whale watching is very popular along the Pacific coast in places like Puerto Vallarta, where humpback whales start arriving in November, although the best time is in January and February when you can see the puppies born in the area. The Lower California Peninsula is another great place to observe whales at this time and is particularly known for the grey whales, known as “friendly” because of their habit of approaching boats to take a look at the passengers on board. Other whales that can be spotted are the whale, the pilot whale and the sperm whale.
The famous American “spring break”, the early spring vacation week, is the most festive period for resorts like Cancun, Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta, and can occur over several weeks usually in March, though sometimes in April. This is the time when you will find the most exciting nightlife and you will have the opportunity to meet patrons in “college” age. For even younger parties, between May and July, particularly in Cancun, fresh graduates arrive!
The Sierra Madre mountain range extends throughout the country from north to south. The mountains cover more than a thousand kilometres, with summits reaching 1800 metres and peaks up to 3000 metres high. The climate here is typically dry during the day and cool at night. The rainy season is from June to October, but it is less intense here thanks to the topography of the mountains that tends to mitigate the climate. If you are interested in a more adventurous trip, including hiking, climbing, mountain biking and hiking, the best time of year may be the dry season to have more time for your outdoor activities, but always with the risk of lower temperatures.
To travel to such a vast and variable country, not to mention the location on the map, which makes it so different from what we are used to, choosing the right time can be the key to making the experience more experienced traveller than as a tourist indulged.
